How to Teach Cell Organelles: Engaging Activities for Learning Cell Structure and Function
Teaching cell organelles can be one of those middle school science topics that seems simple at first, but quickly becomes a lot of vocabulary for students to remember. Nucleus, mitochondria, ribosomes, Golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum … and then you have to help students understand what all those parts actually do!
The key to teaching cell structure and function effectively is to move beyond simply memorizing a diagram. Students need opportunities to see how the parts of a cell work together as a system.
Here are some engaging ways to teach cell theory, cell organelles, and cell structure and function to middle school science students.
Start with Cell Theory
The three basic principles of cell theory are:
- All living things are made of one or more cells.
- The cell is the basic unit of structure and function in living things.
- All cells come from pre-existing cells.
This provides an important foundation for everything students will learn about cell structure.
Instead of presenting cell theory as three statements students just need to memorize, ask students questions such as:
- What evidence do scientists have that living things are made of cells?
- Can a living thing consist of only one cell?
- Why do scientists consider the cell the basic unit of life?
- How are cells similar to and different from one another?
This helps students understand that cell theory isn't just a list. It is a scientific explanation based on observations and evidence.
A reading passage can be especially useful here because it gives students an opportunity to encounter Cell Theory and its vocabulary in context. Teach Cell Structure and Function Together
One of the most important ideas for students to understand is that structure and function are connected.
Rather than teaching:
"The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell."
and moving on, encourage students to think about why a cell needs mitochondria and how mitochondria contribute to the function of the entire cell.
The same approach can be used with other organelles:
- Nucleus: contains genetic information and helps direct cell activities.
- Mitochondria: release usable energy from food.
- Ribosomes: make proteins.
- Endoplasmic reticulum: helps make and transport materials.
- Golgi apparatus: modifies, sorts, and packages materials.
- Lysosomes: help break down materials.
- Cell membrane: controls what enters and leaves the cell.
- Cytoplasm: provides the environment where many cell processes occur.
The exact level of detail you emphasize will depend on your students and standards. For middle school, it is often more useful for students to understand the overall role of each organelle than to overwhelm them with biochemical details.
Give Students Something They Can Build
Cells are microscopic, so one of the challenges of teaching cell structure is helping students visualize something they cannot see with their own eyes.
That's where a 3D cell model can make a big difference.
Instead of looking at a flat cell diagram, students can construct a model and place the organelles into the cell.

Use Interactive Notebooks for Cell Organelle Review
Another effective way to reinforce cell organelles is with an interactive notebook activity.
Interactive notebooks give students something they can return to later when studying for a quiz or reviewing the cell unit. Instead of copying a large diagram from the board, students can create a compact reference that combines the organelle name, image, and function. Don't Forget Plant Cells!
Once students understand the basic structures found in an animal cell, compare plant and animal cells.
Rather than starting over with an entirely new list of organelles, have students think about:
What do plant and animal cells have in common?
and
What structures are different and why?
Students should recognize that plant and animal cells are both eukaryotic cells and share many structures, including a nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, mitochondria, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, and Golgi apparatus.
Plants also have structures such as the cell wall, chloroplasts, and a large central vacuole that are important for their functions.

Let Students Investigate the Cell Membrane
The cell membrane is particularly well suited to a hands-on investigation because students can actually observe evidence of its function.
Instead of simply telling students that the cell membrane is selectively permeable, give them a phenomenon to investigate.
For example, an osmosis lab can help students explore what happens when water moves across a selectively permeable membrane.

This is a great opportunity to connect vocabulary to evidence.
Instead of students simply writing:

Help Students See the Cell as a System
One of the biggest misconceptions students can develop is thinking about organelles as completely separate structures.
A better question is:
How do all of these parts work together to keep a cell functioning?
For example, consider what happens when a cell needs to make and move a protein. Multiple structures can be involved in the process.
Or consider what happens when a cell needs energy. Mitochondria play an important role, but they don't operate independently of the rest of the cell.
This is where the phrase "structure and function" becomes particularly important.
Students should eventually be able to explain not only:
"This is the mitochondrion."
but also:
"The mitochondria help the cell obtain usable energy, which the cell needs to carry out its activities."
That small shift from identification to explanation is an important step in developing scientific understanding.
Mix Up the Ways Students Learn
Cell organelles are vocabulary-heavy, so using the same type of activity every day can quickly become repetitive.
Instead, try combining several approaches:
Read: Introduce cell theory and vocabulary through a short informational passage.
See: Examine cell diagrams and models and look through a microscope.
Build: Construct a 3D cell model.
Cut and paste: Create an interactive notebook.
Compare: Identify similarities and differences between plant and animal cells.
Investigate: Conduct an osmosis or cell membrane experiment.
Explain: Have students describe how an organelle's structure relates to its function.
Review: Return to the cell model, notebook, diagrams, and vocabulary throughout the unit.
This combination gives students multiple opportunities to encounter the same concepts without simply repeating the same worksheet.

Teaching cell organelles doesn't have to mean handing students a labeled cell diagram and asking them to memorize a bunch of vocabulary words.

When students understand that every organelle has a role and that those roles work together to keep the cell functioning, the cell diagram starts to become more than a collection of colorful shapes and unfamiliar names.
It becomes a model of a living system.
